Uncertainty

Be helpless, dumbfounded,
Unable to say yes or no.
Then a stretcher will come from grace
To gather us up.

We are too dull-eyed to see that beauty
If we say we can, we’re lying.
If we say No, we don’t see it,
That No will behead us
And shut tight our window onto spirit.

So let us rather not be sure of anything,
Besides ourselves, and only that, so
Miraculous beings come running to help.
Crazed, lying in a zero circle, mute,
We shall be saying finally,
With tremendous eloquence, Lead us.
When we have totally surrendered to that beauty,
We shall be a mighty kindness.
— Rumi (Zero Circle)

Chrysalis

How strange that the nature of life is change, yet the nature of human beings is to resist change. And how ironic that the difficult times we fear might ruin us, are the very ones that can break us open and help us blossom into who we were meant to be.

New Paintings

I’ve returned to paint. As I close my eyes, I see colors and shapes that summon memories from the past. My sister and I exploring our grandfather’s garden to find wild berries, then tumbling down sand dunes for hours, until the landscape filled us with fresh air and wonder.

My fingers brushing through my dog’s fur, as I hid in silence, waiting to be found by friends. A warm sweater offering comfort from the afternoon chill, scratches on my belly as I crawled through the tower of hay bales outside the stable; our parents doing their best to give us a colorful childhood.

Framed

Moving into a new home gave me the perfect excuse to finally frame my paintings.

They were beautifully framed at this little frame shop in the heart of Coyoacán, Mexico City.

And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.

Tribe

And it turns out that tribes, not money, not factories, that can change our world, that can change politics, that can align large numbers of people. Not because you force them to do something against their will. But because they wanted to connect.
