Wandering

One of the skills I’ve had to learn as an artist is my ability to trust my instincts. My socialized mind wants to know: is what I am making any good? Who will like this? Is this worth my time and energy? These are all values of the modern productive world, but inside I am guided by something simple: I wonder what happens if I do this instead of that?

My task is to bypass my rational socialized mind so I can play. In a world where productivity seems to matter most, making something out of curiosity has become a radical act.

Serendipity

Mistakes are one of the best ways to get new ideas. When something doesn’t go as planned, I ask, what can I make of this now? My mind likes to solve puzzles, so any new challenge brings up connections I’d never considered.

Scarred

I wonder if I'll ever be able to tolerate people getting too close to me. When it happens now, I panic. I feel like closing the door and running away. It happens to me whenever someone is friendly and wants to get close. I always felt that this made me a bad person, someone who couldn't relate to others, but as I understand how we attached to our parents as children, I start to judge myself less and want to find ways to heal something that was shaped at birth.

Discern

Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle: Some things are within our control, and some things are not. It is only after you have faced up to this fundamental rule and learned to distinguish between what you can and can’t control that inner tranquility and outer effectiveness become possible.
— Epictetus
